Assembly

I’llprobably  get bored with this when I’m about halfway done — assembling blocks into a top is not my favorite part of the process so this weekend sew-in is a good thing for me. It will keep me from leaving this up on the design wall for another week!

Some tips for assembling these blocks – I use a walking foot to handle the layers (these blocks are pieced on a muslin foundation). If I move my needle all the way to the right, I can use the edge of the foot to line up my blocks and get a 1/4 inch seam.

I iron all my seams open on these blocks to decrease bulk — this makes them lie flat which helps a LOT when I go to quilt them.

I assemble my blocks in groups of 4 — the top 16 blocks have been assembled into 4 block sections already. This helps make sure I don’t get my blocks out of order as I’m creating a diamond with each group of 4.

Really like these diamond blocks. Maybe it’s the black center strip that makes them pop. Very nice.

  • Angie:

It’s nice following the weekend progress Mary. The diamond strings look wonderful! I like that there is the black dominate strip throughout the blocks. I may catch up with all of you. I’m a bit under the weather this weekend. Nice work!

  • That looks so good. I love those diamonds.

Super Duper Work. As always!! When I look at the quilt as it is, on the design board, all seams not sewn together yet, the white of the design board shining thru, there’s sparkles of light at the center of the 4-block units. Looks just like light reflecting of of a facet of a jewel/stone/gem.! A true Diamond In The Rough!! Do/Can you see it too?

  • Kathy Wagner:

Great tips! And your quilt layout is lovely!

  • Jackie:

Thanks for the hints. I always had a hard time getting an accurate 1/4″ seam with my walking foot. I never thought of moving the needle over. Duh!!

  • Thanks for the tips…those seams can get so thick and hard to quilt when ironing to one side which I have always done. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day!

  • after you make big 4 patches, then do you contine to make bigger 4-patches or sew into rows and join like that?

BTW, I really like the new look of your blog.

    Love from Texas! ~bonnie
