Thanks for wishing me well

Yesterday was just terrible, in addition to the headache my allergies went crazy on the plane — I just don’t tolerate scents anymore and some people seem to bathe in their cologne and perfumes.

After getting here to Mom’s and taking an entire pharmacy worth of pills, I went to bed at 7PM and got up this morning feeling much better.

We’ve had a lazy day talking and planning quilts and I’ve had just a mild headache.

Hopefully, tomorrow we’ll do something quilty that I can photograph and share with you.

  • Perfume is what made me cancel my gym membership. Imagine working out and breathing hard and someone who has bathed in perfume gets on a machine right next to you. Ack! I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move either, because then you have to wait for a machine.

  • Oh gosh I’m glad you’re getting through that horrible suffering of scents, Mary. Ugh. I understand. And isn’t bathing just good enough anymore?

  • Susan Denton:

Being at Mom’s probably helps a lot. Having good company and talking your favorite subject is so soothing. Take care.

  • Tanya:

I’m not a perfume fan but I never thought about it bothering other people. I guess it is just as well that I don’t have any. Hope you continue to be on the mend.

  • One of my pet peeves is the people who bathe in their perfume/cologne. I had a patron come into the library once who must have poured the whole bottle over her head……….I had an instant migraine. I don’t use any myself anymore and don’t like highly scented deodorants either. I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better now though.

  • Gari:

Glad you are feeling better. I used to get headaches but they have really lessoned in the last couple of years: greatful. Hope you and your mom have a great and creative time together.

  • How horrible for you, but I’m glad you’re feeling better. Mother and chicken soup, that’s the perfect cure! Mind you talking “Quilt” will definitely help too.

  • Alison:

Oh you have my sympathy Mary, this is one of my pet hates too, I can’t imagine how awful it must be to be trapped on an aeroplane with it. I hope you’re fully recovered soon, quilts and mums – very therapeutic :o )

  • Mam:

Mary, I feel your pain! I too have severe allergies and have to limit where I go due to other people being inconsiderate by bathing themselves in perfume. Fabric softener scents is also another one of my pet peeves. Glad to hear I’m not alone. Take care.

  • Finn:

So glad you are feeling some better Mary. The strength of your reaction might be a very good thing to talk to your Dr. about. It has the potential to shut down your ability to breathe, and that is no small thing. Think of the headaches as a warning sign. More and more of us are falling over the edge with the chemicals in our daily lives. Hugs for a happy visit, Finn

  • Nothing like Mom to make us feel better! :~) I hope that you continue to feel better and get to enjoy your visit.

  • Mary,
I have had bad headaches all my life since I was about 15 years old. The worst for me was always scents, they just make my head ache ten times more. I hope you feel better and you have a great time with your mon.

  • Hi Mary,

Have been out of town. Sorry you have been ill. Get better soon. I sure have missed reading your blog. I’m up to date now.

  • So glad you’re feeling better!
Know what you mean about perfumes and other smelling things people wear — they do me in, too!

  • Dawn:

That right there is one of the reasons I don’t wear perfume if we are going out someplace like shopping. You never know how your choice of perfume will affect someone else. Some people are so sensitive to smells. Glad you woke up feeling a bit better!!

I do wear cologne/perfume but am always conscious when I put it on that I don’t overdo it. Don’t have allergies but even without them I feel for people who do, particularly if they have to go through the cosmetics department at a store. At least they’ve stopped just randomly spraying you, without asking first, with whatever perfume they’re hawking that day. I used to really resent that.

  • Glad to hear you’re doing much better…I try to keep away from those people spraying you in the department stores and I also do not wear perfume unless very mild on my wrist. Soon you will be home and feel much better. Take care and regards to mom.

  • I just cant stand perfumes anymore either. Especially the Calvin Klien variety- they are instant hayfever & headache!

  • Eileen Keane:

    Hi Mary,
I had knee surgery so I haven’t been at my computer for a while. The quilts look great and I think you’re such a hero in this endeavor.
About the headaches-you really should get them checked out by a doctor.
I am having trouble with scents lately as well. It can be horrible in an elevator or ladies room.

  • I understand about the prefume. It used to be old ladies, now it is the youth. we at work joke that they marinate in stink. ha, how true. I work at a university and woah…. they use a lot of it! I know how you feel. Lizzie
