I was reading a post at Tanya’s blog which reminded me I’d been lax in backing up my blog. I’d love to have a hard copy of it but haven’t found a method that isn’t time consuming and┬ácumbersome. So for now, I pull up the monthly pages and save them as an HTML file and then back those up to a separate on site storage device….of course, a fire would wipe it out both my original and backed up copies but my one trial with off site backups was kind of a pain so I’m not bothering with that anymore.

So do you backup or just hope for the best?

I have an external hard drive backup for my computer but never thought about backing up my blog. Sounds like I need to learn something. Going to check out Tanya’s blog now.

I have been hoping for the best…but we do back up other important things on the computer on a backup drive that my husband keeps at his office. That means that in case of fire, we still have something.

As far as fire proofing – buy one of those fire resistant safes, burn your files to a dvd or cd or even usb stick and keep the media in the safe. You could also keep government papers in there too, if they’re not already protected against fire.

Hi Mary, I use, but as I’ve never lost my blog, I have no idea how well the restore facility works. However, once you’ve set it up, the backups are done automatically and you don’t have to think about it again. I’ve also converted my blog into book form and bought the pdf file (was just a couple of dollars) through, though this is quite time-consuming to create the book. This is something I’ll probably do every 6 months or so.

If you’ve got really valuable stuff, you could always set up a reciprocal arrangement with a friend / family member where you post your backup CD’s or memory sticks to them on a regular basis, it depends how disciplined about it you want to be :). I confess I don’t back up anything anywhere near as often as I should, and if someone broke in and stole my computer I’d really be up the creek without a paddle LOL!

Well, that would be a shock for sure! I keep planning to make a blog book but never get around to it!

Sorry you’r still not feeling well. You do fantastic quilting even if you’re not in tip top shape! I ran over to the link that Alison suggested for blog backup. Wonder if it really works?
