Still thinking about 9 patch settings

If I decide to sash both of these are possibilities. I love the look of sashing, just not the extra work.

I like this one better I think but it would be even more work. (Have I mentioned I’m kind of a lazy quilter?)

Kathy shared a photo of one of her 9 patch quilts that I really like too — with hourglass blocks. Some of my favorite 9 patch quilts have alternate hour glass blocks.

My copy of Gwen Marston’s Liberated Quiltmaking II arrived today – I have the first book and love it and was excited to get this one too. I have some ideas floating around in my head….

I like that second setting the best. Funny thing is I pulled out a baggie chocked full of nine patches and nine patch sections yesterday that I totally forgot about. They were left over from the quilt I donated to Quilts of Valor. I loved those fabrics so it was exciting to see the whole bag full of goodies.
Lazy quilter here-but I if I’m in good company with you, I’ll be happy to call myself that.
Thanks for the Cherry House tip. I’ve admired those quilts for some time-great idea and the quilts always look great without a lot of fussing.

    Hi Mary,
I like the bottom one, the one with the skinny sashing between 4 blocks. I have been busy trying to trim up my scrap bin and have a leader/ender project going with 9 patches. You definitely have my wheels turning now! I need to first finish off a baby quilt, then I’m making a quick Bricks and Stepping stones for my friend who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer (we are both 43 and have known each other since kindergarten). Hubby got me the Pajama Quilter book and DVD for Christmas. Haven’t tried yet, I’m still practicing with my panto’s until I feel a little more confident. I did quilt 3 quilts for Christmas – a big step for me to actually put a real quilt on the machine. Thanks for inspiring me. in NH

I like the 1st setting, to make a little easier you could just put a plain block in there instead of the teeny 9-patch (they seem to get wonky even if you make em with strip sets). I like the the hourglass one Kathy made that you linked too.

  • I really like the top one. You a lazy quilter? What does that make me?

  • I like them both, but I really like the bottom one. It’s really cute with the skinny sashing. I have a whole other pile of Christmas 9-patches left over from my 9 patch and hourglass quilt I just did, so that might be a good idea for those. I have as many left as I used in the first quilt so there should be plenty!

  • I like the first one best. I really like quilts without borders. I wish my copy of Gwen Marston’s Liberated Quiltmaking II would arrive.
    Can’t wait to see it.

  • What about 4-Patches for the sashing cornerstones? I was actually thinking about doing something like that with 16 patches where your large 9 patches are and 4 patches in the sashing cornerstones.

  • Oooh…I am liking both of those settings too. And I’m with you…sashing is a lot of work. But usually worth the extra effort.

Perhaps you could address the sashing and corner posts as more a part of your block instead of actual long sashing strips? You know…kind of have your 9-patch blocks with *frames* instead of sashing? Just a thought. ;-)

  • Yep, I like the 2nd one best (of COURSE! HA). And I do like alternating hourglass blocks as well. It’ll be pretty no matter what you decide.

  • I like both of your settings-like the 2nd one the best. And I love to use hourglass blocks for the square in a square look. 9 patches are so fun to work with.

Both hands up here for #2 … yes, more work, but in the long run a quilt is “forever” so make it the best way you can in your favorite pattern and colors … that’s my motto!

  • Evelyn:

I love 9-patches set just about anyway! I just made a bunch of mis-mashed BRIGHT ones – and think I am going to set them together 4 at a time to make even a bigger block and then maybe sash that with some sort of cornerstones. I don’t really mind making sashing. Your colors are really nice together – I am looking forward to seeing how you decide to set them! Cheers! Evelyn

  • I prefer #2 as well. I’d like to make this quilt so would you mind listing the two sashing widths and the 9-patch sizes? Perhaps if a bunch of your blog readers decided to make their own versions of this quilt it might inspire you to do one yourself! I like Darcie’s comment to treat the sashing as frames so it would be less daunting.

  • Very fun! I like them all! Thanks for the link!

  • Sheila:

I love #2 in this post! I agree with Darcie, too; whenever I do sashing like this I add it to the top and left side of a block, instead of a row.

This isn’t my picture, but I have a UFO (somewhere!) that will end up like this (http://tinyurl.com/yeg7v3e). I also like a 9-patch & rails on point.
