Quilting in the dark

Keith came home this evening and asked why I was quilting in the dark – That’s what happens when your thread blends too well with the fabrics in the top and you need to see where you’re going.

This is another donated top from Tamera.

EDIT: If interested in how Tamera made this top, she has a tutorial on her blog.

Quilted with freehand leaves and loops.

I have a couple leaves pantographs I like a lot but the Circle Lord template is still on the table and I might do one more top before taking it off so I went ahead and quilted the leaves freehand. Given how well the thread blended with a lot of the fabric, a panto would have been easier.

I quilt in the dark too when I have trouble seeing thread. It sure does help to be able to see where your going and where you’ve been! :)

  • It is just beautiful. I don’t think I could quilt anything freehand that evenly.

  • stitchernow:

    Your freehand is amazing!!!!

  • I can see that would be a problem. But you did a wonderful job with it. Looks great!

  • Be still my jealous heart!! How lovely that looks.

  • Pat:

Love this quilt and your quilting looks awesome!

I recently saw a method for this where you sew squares together and then cross cut them and sew it back together to get the tessallating windmills. Is it possible to find out if that’s how Tamara made the quilt and what the name of the pattern is if she did? Would be a great one for out Quilts for Kids group.

  • This is the Tamera who made the quilt, lol.

Yes, this is a quilt that’s made by sewing together the squares and then cutting the quilt apart and resewing it. I used a specialized template and I have a tutorial on my blog if you’d like to take a gander at it.

It’s a REALLY fun quilt to make and it uses up LOTS of stash. I may be making a couple again soon. I have made baby quilts from this pattern, too. You can see pics of those on my blog as well. They go together really quickly and they’re CUTE!

Mary, you make those quilts look SOOOOOO wonderful. It’s true what they say, “the quilting makes the quilt!”

  • Love the pattern and the quilting and the fabrics that Tamera used are gorgeous!
