My first pair of socks are done

I finished them up this evening while I watched the Colts lose the Super Bowl.

And just look at how neat that heel turned out!

I’ve already got another sock cast on but this one using fingerling weight yarn (the above socks are sport weight) and size 2 needles which feel like tooth picks in my hands. These are toasty warm and they fit so nice!

I was reading one of the sock books I bought today and she has several patterns for tube socks — it never occurred to me to not knit socks with a heel but I was thinking it might be a good pattern to practice two at a time socks since they look so easy and I wouldn’t even have to worry about the heels — has anyone made tube socks? Any reason I shouldn’t give them a try?

Tonight’s cleaning task is moving the 3 stacks of mail from the kitchen and filing it all right after I do my Wii. Maybe I’ll even get a little sewing in.

  • Those socks are super. very proffessional looking. A good job well done!

  • Red socks look great. I really love them.

  • looks great, once you make a few pairs you won’t even think about that heel anymore.
MY DD makes her own socks and now the heels are just as easy as knitting, keep going!
    love the red :)

  • Love those red socks! I’ve never made tube socks, but they’re supposed to wear well, since there’s no heel to wear out. The wear is evenly distributed around the middle of the sock. Give it a try and see how they fit. Be sure to let us know!

    Mary, great looking socks….well done!!
There’s just nothing like the fit of a hand-knit sock….cozy and warm, too.
I, too, love the red. What color are the socks you’ve just cast on?
    Have fun!

  • I love the way they look. Do you use a circle needle for that? or do you make you socks with 3 needles I always think that looks so hard to do. I am tempted to learn – maybe the tube sock is easier for beginners?

  • they look fantastic! I’ve not tried the tube, but they should be easy. Heels are fun for me. Look at it as a break in the middle of the sock knitting. A tube could get boring, but then it should be fast.

  • Great job on your red socks. They are perfect for February’s special days – Valentine’s and Go Red for Heart Health.

Most of the socks I’ve made are fingering weight. I find the sport weight ones too warm.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Look at those happy, sassy feet!!! Good job.

  • Flatlander (Linda):

I was going to ask what the difference between fingering and sport weight was … from the looks of it at some on-line knitting sites the fingering yarn looks “thinner” and probably results in a thinner, lighter weight sock. Do I have this right? I am soooo tempted to try these ….

  • The red socks look great! I can’t go lower than a size 2.5 needle – I’ve snapped a few of the wooden DPN’s and they just feel like toothpicks! Anytime you have to cast on more for a sock than a sweater, then there’s something wrong IHMO! :-) I’ve tried tube socks and they are too boring for me. I set goals based on what’s coming up next so I like the variety that the turned heel gives me. The longest part of the sock for me is the foot because all the fun parts are done!

  • Jay:

Tube socks, wear out quicker depending on if you use a reinforced heel stitch when making your heel flaps. But I find turning the heels, and the gusset are my favorite part of making socks! I expect to see you wearing a pair of hand-knit socks when I see you in March, Mary!

  • Dawn:

They turned out great!! Love the color you chose!!

  • They look great, love the color.

  • The look so good! Don’t they feel different from most storebought socks? You’re hooked! :)

  • I have made tube socks for men when I did not know what size to make. Two at a time is how I make ALL my socks. The red ones are fantastic. I need to go finish the mittens I’m working on, which, BTW, are done 2 at a time on two circs.

  • They look great and the color is awesome!

    Hi Mary,
The trouble with hand knit tube socks is the stress it puts on the heel. There is no nice little “pocket” for the heel.
