Hi Mary,
The trouble with hand knit tube socks is the stress it puts on the heel. There is no nice little "pocket" for the heel.

I have made tube socks for men when I did not know what size to make. Two at a time is how I make ALL my socks. The red ones are fantastic. I need to go finish the mittens I'm working on, which, BTW, are done 2 at a time on two circs.

Tube socks, wear out quicker depending on if you use a reinforced heel stitch when making your heel flaps. But I find turning the heels, and the gusset are my favorite part of making socks! I expect to see you wearing a pair of hand-knit socks when I see you in March, Mary!

The red socks look great! I can't go lower than a size 2.5 needle - I've snapped a few of the wooden DPN's and they just feel like toothpicks! Anytime you have to cast on more for a sock than a sweater, then there's something wrong IHMO! :-) I've tried tube socks and they are too boring for me. I set goals based on what's coming up next so I like the variety that the turned heel gives me. The longest part of the sock for me is the foot because all the fun parts are done!

I was going to ask what the difference between fingering and sport weight was ... from the looks of it at some on-line knitting sites the fingering yarn looks "thinner" and probably results in a thinner, lighter weight sock. Do I have this right? I am soooo tempted to try these ....
