A poor batting choice
Picture me sitting here all day struggling to pull my needle through this Warm & White batting as I tied this HeartStrings quilt. I had a second quilt that I could have tied but decided I’d substitute another batting or maybe a blanket as my fingers were sore after tying the first quilt…..which feels great now that it’s tied but was just too hard to needle.

One of the reasons I only use this batting for machine quilting. I hand quilted a quilt one time with Warm and White, and it was pure torture! However, it’s one of my favorite batts for machine quilting. Its amazing how each product has a place it should be used in.
The Warm Company bats (mostly) have scrim in them which makes them very hard work for hand quilting. Hobbs and Quilters Dream don’t use scrim (on the whole) and they’re much better for hand work. The fascinating world of batting

Great photos and awesome quilts.
What a great quilt show that was! So many great string quilts!
The first and last time I tied a quilt, I found it really difficult but I don’t remember what kind of batting it was. I thought it was the needle.I switched needles and it didn’t make any difference. I’ll have to give it another shot but with a batting recommended for hand quilting. Oh I almost forgot, I looked at all your photos and the quilts are beautiful. I really liked the homespun one and the ugliest square note was funny. I didn’t think it was ugly at all!
Oh—Mary! What lovely pictures of everyone and their quilts! So many—-I must admit I sure like the string quilts with the plaid fabrics—I’m just drawn to them, but really they are all wonderful. How do you know, or where do you find out how to join a group of quilters making string quilts? I wish there was a group here in Sonoma County where I live. See all the fun you seemed to be having, and how productive you all were makes me want to make another string quilt. Sorry you had such a time tying that quilt too—
Hmmm, I almost always use W&N for hand quilting and it has been fine, but you are using a much larger needle than the 11 or 12 betweens I use for hand quilting…sorry you had so much trouble with it. That is frustrating.

Wow! It sure looks like a lot was accomplished. I used Warm & Natural once on a runner and hand quilted with a larger needle, because I wanted large stitches. I had a hard time too, but the worse was that some of the batting would come out with the needle. I couldn’t figure out at first why there was white spots all over the back, and of course, you couldn’t remove them. My sister uses it all the time, but for machine quilting.
I have a roll of Warm and White for machine quilting and I love it there. It’s funny how so many different products give different results. When I used to tie quilts alot, there was a straight poly loft that I liked. It allowed the needle to go through easily. I tried tying a quilt a while back and the yarn was so big it really had a hard time pulling through. You really have lots of quilts done. Congrats on that!
I always use W&N for hand quilting and like it, as TerriW above said. Now I am wondering what other people use that might be better??
Looks like it was a very productive Sew-In. Thanks for taking time to post photos. All the tops/quilts look so nice!
