Online fabric shopping

Do you shop for fabric online? I don’t do much of it but I’ve shopped some at Thousands of Bolts (thanks to reading about the site on JudyL’s blog ) but it always seemed like a laborious process to scroll through all the screens looking for what I wanted….until someone mentioned on HeartStrings that their search features had improved so of course I had to run over and check it out.

After using the different filters and still having to page through more fabric that didn’t match what I was looking for, I happened upon the Color Picker (under the Find a Fabric heading) and WOW, I asked for a specific shade of blue and while all the results weren’t exact, most were pretty darn close. Needless to say, there’s a box of fabric heading my way soon.

  • Oh dear, this could be dangerous!!

  • Thank you for the link Mary. They have a wonderful selection of “wide backings”. I’m slowly switching to only wide backing fabric instead of pieced backings.

  • I do shop for fab online a LOT!! Usually if I’m looking for something specific or just perusing sales. I’ve found a lot of time when I receive my order, I go “what’s this?!” as it looks nothing like the photo online. I think that’s the biggest problem with not seeing it in person.

  • Now that is a dangerous tip you just shared. Why didn’t you just bring me a 5 pound box of chocolate with it? I’ll be sure to give hubby your address when the bill comes :) He will be looking for you! ;)

I do shop on line and have (for the most part) been pleased, especially with the prices, even after adding shipping costs. However, it’s important to support your LQS, too. I like http://www.zandsfabrics.com/ who are having a 20% off sale on the entire site starting 8/20 (I think) and http://www.fatquartershop.com who turns your order around VERY quickly. Good topic, Mary!

  • Mary, I do buy fabric online a lot…many times it will not be the color I thought it is going to be. Thanks for the link, like the color picker.

  • Oh dear this was probably what I didn’t NEED to hear but thanks for the info Mary. You do know that I’ll have to check them out again too. LOL

  • In my humble opinion, and I do a lot of online shopping …or did till I bound my hands and wallet as there is no more room in the inn….
but I think they have the best shopping features of any fabric store that I have come across and I have not missed too many over the years.
I chose all the fabrics for a group quilt for an 0 birthday for one of our sit and sew ladies. I love matching fabrics and using the wish list, finding other colors that match and all the fabrics in a range.
And the service is fabulous. I bought a lovely backing fabric that I used for a commissioned quilt…….that sounds so grand…and I was so scared stiff…….but they are great.

thanks for the link, I have seen the add in the quilting magazines, but never bothered to check it out. Needless to say, there is a box of fabric on its way to me and the price is so good, and they ship internationally! Marilyn is right, you have opened a door that can’t be closed again!! LOL

  • I’ve looked at their site in the past, but since I have a very short attention span, I got bored with wading through page after page to find something. However, this colour picker feature could make a lot of difference. Oh dear …………

  • Thanks for that tip! In my stashbusting efforts, I hadn’t been over there in a while.

  • I think the functions this site offers are just fantastic.
My only problem is I have to stick to 6 yds approx for shipping to Australia and less when it is widebacks…but we planned a quilt for a friends 0 birthday and it was so easy using the wish and then look and all the other functions they have. Wish more stores had this one.
