I’m such a Chicken

I didn’t intend to quilt tonight but I wandered downstairs for some reason that I can’t remember now and ended up loading and quilting this HeartStrings top from Tish. I love the colors in this one!

As I was loading it I was thinking about doing my Baptist Fans on it but decided I was ready to try the Fern Ziggles design from the new Pajama Quilter DVD. I’m such a CHICKEN when it comes to trying out new quilting designs, I’ll draw them out for months and keep chickening out when it comes time to actually put them on a quilt but after seeing Kathie’s quilt earlier today I bit the bullet.

Is it perfect? NO. Is it kind of wonky looking? YES. Do I need more practice? YES. Was it fun to quilt? HECK YES!

I was a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to create the right amount of space between my spines because I only have 12 inches of quilting space on my Premier but it worked out OK. I found that if I quilted the line and then the top half of the wiggle, I could advance the quilt to give myself room before quilting the bottom half.

  • I LOVE that pattern and think you did a fabulous job. Looks GREAT! And that baby is just TOO SWEET!

It looks like so much fun I am going to bite the bullet as well and do one on my granddaughters quilt. I love it. I don’t have a longarm I only have 6″ but I figure if I do it smaller it may work out.

  • I like the colors on this quilt too! The quilting looks great to me — aren’t you glad you just plunged in?

  • We are our own worst critics! I think it looks super! Now, you make me want to load a quilt and try it out. I just watched this one the other day and it looked fun and fast and easy. Too bad I’m back to work and have less time. Maybe if I get up a little early, load the quilt in the morning before work and jump right into it when I get home…I think tomorrow I will have a quilt to show :)

  • kathie:

looks great Mary. I ended up advancing the quilt after the top part was quilted like you did and you are right, it was fun.

  • It came out fine Mary, isn’t it fun to overcome your fears? I find that afterwards I wonder what I was so afraid of.

  • Good job on pushing out of your comfort zone!

  • Diane:

    It looks terrific!

  • Susan D:

The Ziggles turned out great! You always do a wonderful job on your quilting. I just love that you go for it! I too only have about 12″ of quilting space– I’ve got an Avante by HQ. So that’s a good tip about advancing it for the bottom side of the line. I’m the one who’s still trying to get the gumption to try the Baptist Fans freehand!

  • Way to go…trying a new quilting pattern! Looks like fun!

  • Great job – it looks like you’ve been doing this pattern for a long time and not just starting out!

  • Geri Faivre:

    Hi Mary,

You are so talented. I like all of your quilting. Sometimes the wonky ones best. I have a question – Tamera’s quilts that you showed on August 15th – what size were the blocks? I have a lot of 3, 4, & 5″ blocks & I thought that would be a good quilt for the generosity project for our quilt guild. Should be quick & easy to put together.

Also, your grandson is so beautiful. We have a 4 month old great-grandson.

    Have a great day!

  • I’m proud of your bravery! I have been hankering over the new Pajama Quilter DVD since I knew it was coming out. I will be ordering it up soon…Thanks for your help on the channel lock. I think I have that puppy under submission for the 1st time since I got the Gammill!

  • I think it’s great! I know what you mean about chickening out. I haven’t tried any of the designs either but now that I’ve seen how terrific it looks I’m going to give it a try!

  • Silverthimble:

The fern ziggles are perfect! I think this now my favorite quilting design! Don’t change a thing!

  • Oh – I’m loving those ziggles!! I’m so with you on being a chicken about trying new quilt patterns. Seeing all your comments about the new Pajama Quilter DVD I unearthed my old DVD and have been rewatching. Yesterday I actually bit the bullet and started some wonky feathers quilting!!!! I’ll get pictures on my blog in the next couple of days. It’s usually easier than you think when you actuall DO IT :)
