More on decluttering

I’ve had some interesting comments and emails on my post already and I thought I’d explain things a little more.

I am a packrat … I like to keep things in case I need them later but luckily we have moved every 1-5 years during our 25 years together and each time we move I downsize and declutter. I’ve been here at the townhouse for 5 years now so I have 5 years worth of clutter to get rid of.

Because I travel so much the last thing I want to do when I am at home is to clean and organize. I can’t take weeks to sort and donate to multiple organizations or people and there’s too much to throw out for me to put out for my usual trash pick up.

If I’m going to get this done, I need EASY and FAST that’s why I’m going to use 1-800-Junk. I did have Keith take some things over to the Salvation Army yesterday for donation but most of it will be set aside and hauled away along with the furniture and the trash. I’ll let 1-800-Junk donate what can be reused.

From their website:

When we arrive, just point to the items you want removed and we’ll provide you with an up-front, all-inclusive price. Once you say the word, we’ll haul your goods away from wherever it’s located and finish by cleaning up the area. Plus, we recycle and donate your items whenever possible. Since 1989, we’ve saved over 1.5 billion pounds of junk from the landfill, and counting.

As far as decorating, it’s never been my strong suit and we have a hodgepodge of furniture bought for different homes that doesn’t particularly go together or even function optimally in this space as well as it would if we’d bought it for the space but I refuse to redo the room completely since we may move in 6 months to a year …. Or we may not!

My solution might not be for everyone but it will work for me … Declutter, use most of the furniture we already have, replace the carpet, and have someone do a thorough cleaning downstairs — we’re cleaning as we go but I want windows and everything scrubbed!

I’m traveling again in a week and spraining my ankle will slow me down but I plan to have it done by the end of November. Wish me luck.

Good plan! I love it when people organize help for getting a home to feel like a real home again. You can get so much more done than alone. 🙂 Good luck with your plan and have a quick recovery on your ankle!

Mollie, when you get finished with yours please come to CA to help me with mine. I am somewhat of a packrat but my husband is a full blown packrat!

Whatever works for you Molly. I think you have everything under control & admire all the donation quilts you do. You sound pretty darn organized to me.

I watched Katie Couric as I pressed seams on a quilt top today and she was talking decluttering. We all do it at some level except for my friend Karen who actually declutters once a month and even has an ongoing plan. Her husband hides stuff in the shed to keep it and her daughter moved out at 18 and lives a block away with her stuff. Hope the ankle gets better soon – is the swelling decreasing at all? Hop the trip is fantastic.

Mary a designer doesn’t cost that much. Well maybe I should say in my area they are about $35/hr. I had one when we moved here 2002. She used all my existing items and I bought 3 items she recommended. I only had her do my living room and family room. 2yrs ago we remodeled the kitchen and dining room. I called her and told her the look I wanted (warm, cozy and to with standing little ones). She brought/showed me 3 selections, I picked the ones I liked. We did purchase a new couch and 2 chairs for the living room which she selected, she hit the nail on the head perfectly. All my other items were reused but in a different way. I took up all the carpet … 7 different whites (oh gawd) and installed hardwood all thoroughout the upstairs including the kitchen. I LOVE LOVE it. Her price was still the same $35/hr. I do try to declutter twice a year, it’s a job. Good luck

Wish I lived closer…I would volunteer to help. I love cleaning and purging and sometimes it is way more fun at a friend’s! I have a great friend and we help each other with this about once a year. This summer I de-cluttered 15 years worth of kid toys and finished unpacking from our move (it’s been 5 years!). It is such a good feeling when it’s done. Hope that ankle cooperates.

That seems like a great company, Mollie! Knowing your good stuff will be donated and the recycling taken care of should relieve a lot of stress for you both. Now you just need to find someone you can supervise so that you can stay off your foot! Get better soon!
