1. ME!! When we bought the Highlander, we could’ve gotten the built in GPS but it was outrageously expensive. I figured at long as we keep vehicles, it would have been outdated (several times) before we got rid of the car. I bought the Garmin Street Pilot C340. The reason I went with it was because it will say “turn left in .2 miles on Main Street”. Several other models just said “turn left in .2 miles”. I didn’t want to have to be guessing which street they were talking about. Also, with some of them, Tom Tom maybe, you only get parts of the U.S. on CD and you have to re-load, depending on which area you’re driving through. Conceivably, if you’re driving from MO to LA, you might have to re-load the darned thing. I didn’t even check to see how many CD’s they had or where the country was divided. So far, Garmin has sent me one CD with updates/changes. I just loaded the CD on the computer, then did the update on the GPS via USB.They’re probably making a newer model now than the C340 but I’ve been very pleased with it. I’ve driven to Kansas City once and Louisiana twice using it.

  2. My fil just got a GPS as part of his cell phone. It’s blue tooth ready so he can use a headset as well as use it on the speaker phone in the car. Not sure what the additional charge/package price for the cell is — but he loves his!

  3. My DH has Tom Tom and it suits him fine as he uses it mostly to map garage sales. Judy is correct about adding new states, etc. I always tell him I am his GPS as I like to read maps. When he’s alone, though, he needs help. 🙂

  4. Mary: I have a TomTom which I love, EXCEPT that when it tells you to turn left/right, it doesn’t tell you the name of the street. There are some out there that do that and I think it would be so much better. They’re great, though, so definitely get one!Connie W. from Stashbusters

  5. My first purchase was a Magellen something or other. It was broken out of the box – couldn’t read the maps on the SD card. The 800 support number is serviced in India and the only thing they’d offer to do is let me send it in for repair. I don’t think so. I was able to return the unit.I got a Garmin Streetpilot 2720 and love it. You can’t go wrong with any Garmin unit. You definitely want the speech to text feature on any unit you get. This feature allow the unit to tell you the street names. Otherwise, you just get “turn left”.

  6. I am directionally challenged. We purchased a Garmin StreetPilot C550 and just love it. The thing I really like is if you make a wrong turn or you want to go a different way than it suggests, it will “recalculate” your route, so you’re never lost. It always knows where you are!

  7. I don’t know how it would fair in the US, but we have a TomTom and love it! No more arguments in the car when I get confused with my left and right ;o)

  8. Hi MaryFirst – You are my inspiration! Keep it simple and I am hooked! Have you done anything with Jelly rolls or charms? Now for the GPS…I have a Michelin GPS. I got it from QVC. Price is reasonable and it is small enough to fit in my purse when I reach my destination so my car doesn’t get broken into as someone tries to steal it!
