Update

I always struggle with how much personal information to share on the blog when it comes to our private lives. In my mind, there’s a balance between sharing too much and sharing just enough that I don’t feel like I’m hiding/ignoring something that impacts the part of my life that I do share here … my quilting, knitting, travels, and family updates.

I posted a couple weeks ago that I had surgery, a partial thyroidectomy — that pathology came back last week positive for cancer. I don’t plan to overshare here as I deal with all that means both medically and emotionally but I will post brief updates at times. The blog will stay focused on my quilting, knitting, travels, and family updates although I expect that the amount I accomplish in the sewing room may be less especially through the summer months – we’ll see how it goes.

Thyroid cancer is highly treatable and slow growing – both big positives and this is going to be something I have treated and then monitored on an ongoing basis. It’s not going to change much except in the short-term.

For now I’ll continue to heal and prepare for a second surgery in mid June. One thing I have learned through the process so far is it’s mostly about waiting …..

Because I’m used to writing about my life and having that record, I’m going to follow in my Dad’s footsteps and keep a small journal where I can make notes about appointments, results, and the more personal things that I wouldn’t want to share publicly. I hesitate to call it a cancer journal but I guess that’s what it is.

On another note, I recently got a long arm and am learning to freemotion quilt. I know you’ve done some pantos and I have to say I hadn’t realized how difficult it is to follow the design with my laser dot. Looks like I am quilting with my feet….

  11. Find strength in the beauty that surrounds you. Family and friends are always supportive and understanding when we are not 100%. Medical treatment for Thyroid Cancer and Thyroid issues have improved greatly over the years. Praying daily that you regain your strength and become healthier every day.

  12. Mary,
You are in my thoughts and prayers. I, too, had thyroid cancer surgery five years ago and colon cancer surgery 15 years ago. One little pill daily is what I need after having my thyroid surgery – an easy, small price to pay for continued good health. I pray that this will be a small bump in the road for you and that this will all be behind you in no time.

  13. Dear Mary,
I’ve been off the computer for a while, so I’m just seeing this now. Prayers for successful surgery and complete healing.

  14. I’m very behind on my blog reading and just read this post today. I had my thyroid removed five years ago and it was cancerous. I hope your doctor is recommending you do iodine radiation. And also that maybe your thyroid is going to be completely removed? As that is safest. Radioactive iodine is very easy to do – just one pill. Side effects are minor. As you said, thyroid cancer is very treatable and curable. Take care.
