Miscellaneous

It’s not assembled yet but I’m making progress on the Layer Cake Hourglass blocks. I don’t talk a lot about my health here and I’m not complaining but one of the things I struggle with post surgery and with the suppression therapy is difficulty focusing … it’s not that I never made mistakes before but I can tell you, I spend more time with my seam ripper these days.

I snapped a final photo of Maureen’s Churn Dash quilt before packing it up – quilted, bound, washed, and ready to use!

I had several questions about the Sashed Tumblers – I’ve got some quilt notes on the website if you’re curious about how it was pieced. If I made it again, I’d use full tumblers on the top and bottom rather than the half tumblers – in fact, I gave that half tumbler die away right after making this top! It’s not hard to bind the irregular tumbler edges.

Now for something gross – we’ve had an invasion of flies the last couple days … ugh!! We had our pest control company out – we’re not sure what’s causing it but we’ll have them come back out and check under the house just in case something crawled there and died. There’s no odor now but we did have something stinky when we got back from the Hatteras trip – it faded really quickly and I’d wondered if it was just from the house being shut up and the A/C being put low while we were gone.

The good news is that a) there are way fewer today than yesterday and b) since I’m leaving Sunday morning it will be Keith’s problem to figure out what the problem is! Luckily, they’re mostly concentrated in one room because it’s bright and sunny there and they’re gathering near the windows. I put some fly paper up and we’re keeping the fly swatter handy but we’re also closing off as much of the house as we can!!

  1. Love Maureens quilt! The jewel tones are beautiful! Have safe travels. Not sure where you are off to, but have fun! Hoping your fly problem gets resolved soon. Nasty!

  2. Love the churn dash and the hourglass quilt. I really like your color choices. Have fun on your trip!

  3. Since I had shingles and the subsequent postherpetic neuralgia 8 years ago, concentration has been one of my biggest problems. I have difficulty memorizing simple knitting and crochet patterns, following quilting directions and with the exhaustion that comes from being in constant pain it has completely changed my life, both at home and work,as well as my productivity. I feel for you…I think I now spend more time ripping out than I spend creating! Enjoy your trip!

  4. I LOVE that colorful churn dash quilt and the great multi-color binding. The black really sets it off.

  5. Love the churn dash quilt. I realized that the baby quilt I made for one of my granddaughters is basically the same as your sashed tumbler. But I had sashing between each row of tumbler blocks.

  6. We have a fly infestation recently also!! They are just GROSS. Several years ago we had an invasion. I’m sure I killed 500+ flies. I would just stand by the sunny bay window and kill about 20-30 at a time. They were very slow so I could swat them easily. We never figured out where they came from back then. And just this past week we had them again. Not nearly as many as before, but annoying all the same. And we’re still not sure where they came from or why. So, sorry you are battling flies. If they are the same kind we had, they will be gone in about 3 days. UGH to those nasty things being gone sooner rather than later.

  7. I take a medication that affects my ability to think linearly which is a form of focus. The medication is the major reason I don’t work anymore. It is frustrating not to follow a thought train the way I used to, but it is a small price to pay for overall health benefits. Flies excuse my yuck. I grew up in Florida and areas near swamps used to be really full of flies. Fly paper works but beware of it. Really read the instructions. And as my mother used to say wash your hands often when it is in the house.

  8. I was interested to read that you wash your quilts before passing them on. I’ve always done the same because I love the look of “instant age”. I’ve mostly used reproduction fabrics in my quilts, so the aging has always been a good thing.

  9. Hi Mary! Maureen’s quilt turned out just beautifully. I really love all the bright colors and that scrappy binding really sets it off nicely. I know she’ll be tickled pink with the results. I’m sorry you are having fly issues – yuck is right. Safe travels to you. ~smile~ Roseanne
