He asked!

We went for a ride at lunchtime … down to Ballast Point and I added a few miles on the way back so I’d log another 10 mile ride this weekend. We have a nice view of the water and downtown from the little restaurant by the pier.

Keith asked me what I wanted to do this afternoon after we got back from our ride … I bet he’s wishing he hadn’t asked!

After measuring the space I have on the wall behind the longarm, I decided to go with two different sizes of the Kallax shelf unit from Ikea. The larger one is 5 x 5 and has 25 cubbies.

The smaller one is 3 x 4 and has 12 cubbies.

It wasn’t easy lugging all the boxes into the house and up the stairs and I’m really not looking forward to assembling them but it will be so nice to have this type of shelving for my stash again.

  1. Read all three posts at once and love that you did some bike riding. Also that you spent time with that cutie Finn. But my daughter was right, IKEA had the solution. Hope the assembly goes well!

  2. I love my shelves. I love Ikea too.

I have been wanting to go to the one in Norfolk for about 6 weeks, but it’s summer….. and the HRBT is no fun in the summer. It’s not much fun anytime, but summer weekends are awful.

I hope you show your stash on the shelves!

  3. Two words: muffin tin. I have an old 12-holer that I keep just for IKEA assembly projects. Sort all the hardware into those cups, and you’re golden!

  4. Love the view you have on your rides! I would never get tired of that. Those shelves will be fantastic for your stash. Ikea has some great storage ideas. And you don’t want those husbands getting bored. I always have something that my husband needs to get done or help me with, I tell him it keeps him young and in shape…lol.

  5. I love Ikea. My whole store is full of Billy bookcases and my stash is stored in Hemnes units with doors. I have put together sooo many IKEA pieces. I have three rules – use real tools and not the tiny Allen wrench. I love a variable speed reversible drill. Do not assume that you know better than the IKEA people. Do it in the order they say! Finally, double and triple check the orientation of your pieces. On more than one occasion things have been installed upside down and required disassembly and reassembly.

  6. I just don’t understand why any city near me does not have an Ikea!! 5 miles from me is South Bend. A great college city. You would think that would draw them in. We have a really large and diverse shopping area or two. Just SMH.

  7. I went to an Ikea once. I literally had a panic attack when the item i went for was found within 3 minutes, but it took 15 to go through the maze to checkout. My husband thought it was amusing until he realized how upset I was. Show us your stash in the cubbies!

  8. How nice that you will have all those cubbies! Our Ikea is four hours away so I guess I’m not going to be able to go cubbie shopping…

  9. I want those, too, but I have no one to lug it. LOL I’ll figure it out one of these days, though!

  10. Hey Mary, I purchased the large IKEA cubby shelf about a year ago to store all my stash and I absolutely love it. I am now trying to come up with a plan to buy a second one for more storage. I love them that much. I also purchased some of the bins to fit inside them, including one that is made for kitties. It slides into one of the cubby holes and has it’s own hole for the kitties to pop into. Love the inovative IKEA creators. (:
BTW, the shelves are super easy to assemble, it just takes a bit of time. If I lived near you I would be there to help assemble it with you. I love that kind of stuff. But, I am a bit too far away. (:
Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada is my home.
