One project leads to another

We started our day cutting and kitting another little car quilt for Mom. After kitting up the Strippie yesterday that will have appliqué cars and trucks, we were talking about other layouts she could use. This one will alternate appliqué cars and trucks with 9 patch blocks. I cut the blocks, strips, borders and binding out and then Mom worked on tracing and fusing the appliqué while I loaded and quilted her Lantern quilt.

I had a question about Mom’s appliqué – she uses fusible web to trace and then cuts and fuses the shapes to the wrong side of her fabric and cuts the shapes out and fuses them onto her background fabric. She machine appliqués them using the blanket stitch on her Bernina. We usually use Heat and Bond lite fusible web and she also uses a Sulky tear easy stabilizer when she goes to stitch them down. Of course, it’s nice when she has a GO die for the appliqué because there’s no tracing needed. She just irons the fusible web onto the wrong side of her fabric and cuts the shapes using the die – that’s easy!

There are lots of tutorials on machine appliqué with fusible web – here’s one link.

While Mom was finishing up … I was quilting. This is #6 of 7 quilts that I’m trying to quilt for her during her visit. Pantograph is Jilly.

  1. Cute quilt! I love all your Mom’s appliqué work. I have never done appliqué but would like to give it a try. Thank you for the link, that will help! The cars and trucks sounds like it will be really cute. Hopefully we will get to see a photo at some point.

  2. Love, love, love that quilt! What pattern is that made from? I love everything about it… the fabrics, the whole shooting match!
