The top is done! I love making progress again. Blocks are 8 inches finished and I set this one 6 x 8 for a quilt that finishes at 48 x 64 inches. I mentioned when I started this that I’ve got this block in one of my books at home but I found a free version online at this link.

After I finished the top, Finn and I took a little walk down the street. I love that this house is on a dead end with just a few houses around it. It’s also very close to the amenities here in Big Canoe and to both gates. I know that many of you don’t like gated communities but we love the access to the amenities and the beauty of Big Canoe so it suits us. If you walk down the street you can even see the lake that I kayak in. Keith says it’s a shame there’s not a neighborhood access to the lake but it’s really not difficult to drive to the marina (maybe we’ll get to know the neighbors). Don’t you love the tree canopy?!

Here’s a view of our house from the street.

I don’t know what theses bushes are but they’re pretty and we have several of them in the yard.

  1. The shrubs look like their from the Rhododendrom family. The house looks pretty sitting on the hill and such a pretty road. I agree you might be a little safer where you both are. Like you said no place is safe. just have to keep our distances from each other. Enjoyed seeing your quilts! Love the doll quilt. I’m sure your granddaughter will love it too. Beautiful job. Pat yourself on the back!! Hope you figure out the fireplace? Stay safe and healthy!!XO

  2. The area around your new home is appealing. The drive will have lovely dappled sunlight this summer. Love the new quilt top.

  3. The quilt is beautiful. You home looks like it’s a cottage in the woods. So welcome and relaxing. A wonderful summer retreat! And you get to be able to be there all year long. So happy for you. Enjoy!

    • Joan B. I think you are correct – if it is, it will have sprays of white flowers in spring, summer. Love your version of this quilt Mary, so bright and cheerful.

  4. Sure love those fabrics and pattern. Your neighborhood looks very pretty. I would like to learn how to kayak, maybe.

  5. I agree with Joan B. We have the Mountain Fire Pieris japonica and it looks just like yours. I love it as it has tiny white flowers in the spring and the red leaves add color too. Lucky for us it’s one of the few shrubs the deer don’t bother with. Enjoy your new home!!

  6. Yes I do love the trees overhead. That spring green is gorgeous and pretty soon you will have a beautiful array of azaleas out. Great job of finishing those blocks into a top.

  7. I know how important I think my opinion about everything is, but why would you care about my opinion about gated communities? Love the outside and maybe you will get to know one of the waterfront neighbors. My mom and dad !lived on a river and allowed some neighbors access. Some were not allowed because they felt entitled to go into the garage bathroom and refrigerator at will. One of their favorite young gentlemen helped dad repair dock boards and once when he brought his dad, with permission, they brought a six pack of my dad’s favorite beer. Being the type of neighbor you want to have worked for this young man because he and his dog were allowed to fish, swim and even use the deck and boathouse.. It wasn’t an act because he was kind and thoughtful to everyone.

  8. I love your Modern Puzzle so much I’ve started one of my own!! Thanks for the inspo 🙂 The pictures of your yard and surrounding areas are so beautiful!

  9. Your location looks very beautiful and so tranquil. I can understand why you love it there. Loving that Modern Puzzle quilt.

  10. Your quilt is so cute!! And beautiful area you live in. I love when streets are lined with trees. And we happen to like gated communities.

  11. Love seeing the area where your new home is. Thank you for the link for the pattern for the quilt you made. Once again, it is so bright and cheerful. Thank you!
