I’m a couple days late posting this but I make and share ideas for RWB quilts for veterans as a way to honor and thank those that have served. My RWB hourglass top quilted last week will be donated to a veteran and I’ve got another RWB top I hope to get quilted this week. I’ve been wanting to make another version of my Autumn Leaves quilt. This one was pieced before we moved to Minneapolis so it’s at least 14 or 15 years old and it’s still one of my favorites.
And since I’m finishing up the two veteran tops I have here, it’s time to start thinking about the next one so I drafted a Rail Fence quilt with friendship stars. Block size will be 6 inches finished, 6.5 inches with seam allowances.

Do you mean 5 1/2 inches after seams? It is beautiful. Hope pattern is on your pattern page. I make Valor quilts. You are such a inspiration!
Diane, it would be 6 inches after seams because you are cutting a 6 1/2 inch square. I love this pattern as well but am going to do in pinks for Victoria’s Quilts ministry – finished 6 inch squares are excellent for the size I need.
LOVE both of those quilts! I’ve never thought about inserting “other” blocks into a rail fence – I’m going to give that a try!
I remember seeing this quilt when I first started following your blog. I liked it then, and like it now. I’ve used a variation of this pattern (thanks for the tutorial!) for a fair number of quilts, including QOVs. I like your latest variation with the friendship star blocks and have RWB fabric scraps sitting next to my cutting area just waiting for a pattern. I think I’ve found it! Thank you… Also, thanks for the link to the Greek rice bowl the other day. My husband and I both enjoyed it.

Your autumn leaves quilt is so pretty! And what a great idea to add the friendship star to a rail fence pattern. That will make a great veteran donation quilt.
Adding the star and leaf blocks really perks up a simple quilt. Of course I also love a simple quilt too!
