I know I won’t get it right all the time but this is the second pieced project in a row that isn’t turning out like I want. I knew the shade of blue wasn’t right … I like gray/blues for my veteran quilts but I ordered these and decided to use them anyway. Then, what I thought was a 2 inch finished HST die, turned out to be a 2.5 inch finished HST. Not a big deal since I had Thangles here which is how I usually make my 2 inch finished HSTs but after cutting a while, I realized I should have just gone with the 2.5 inch HSTs and cut the strips for my Rail Fence block 3 inches. UGH!
I don’t abandon projects that aren’t working out like I planned … I know that just because I don’t love a particular quilt doesn’t mean that someone else won’t … in fact Chris was begging for the square in a square top I just finished (he won’t get it, he’s got plenty of quilts and that one’s for donation) but he really liked it.
So, I’m going to finish these blocks and assemble the top but I am going to downsize it some by making fewer rows. I’m aiming for about 48 x 66 but it’s possible I might go 54 x 72. I’ll wait and see how it goes.

I will make this one again because I like the combination of stars and the rail fence blocks and I think I’ll even use the 2.5 inch finished HST die when I do make it! I do have brief instructions on my website at this link.
Love it and it is perfect as a veteran quilt. Troubles just make you learn more!
You are SEW right, Mary. Just because YOU don’t like the quilt doesn’t mean that a veteran wouldn’t be thrilled to receive it!! Kudos on finishing it anyway.
I REALLY like this quilt for a QOV….the friendship stars are a wonderful addition to the rail fence! As always, you are inspirational in your dedication to achieving your ambitious goals!
I love this quilt and I think the blue fabric adds that additional pop.
You could always put the stars in a row at the ends of either the longer or shorter end of the top. Perhaps use them in a star/solid border with a star as a corner block. Your quilt will be appreciated as a QOV by a veteran.
Oh, it’s a bit annoying when those sorts of things happen. But they turn into creative opportunities!!! I’m sure your project will be much loved and appreciated by the veteran who receives it. You’re off to a great start!
