Deja Vu

It was seven years ago this month that I broke my right ankle … and I broke it again today playing kickball with Chris and his family. I messed up all our plans for the week and Rae went home with her parents and Keith drove me to the ER. I’ll have to call the orthopedic doctor tomorrow and get seen but they X-rayed my ankle, splinted it, and gave me crutches.

There won’t be any hiking for weeks now and that makes me very sad! I also won’t be sewing. Good thing I have some knitting and crochet to work on. Once I see the doctor and get a boot or cast I’ll try to scoot down the stairs on my bottom and maybe I’ll be able to pin baste the doll quilt and hand quilt it too. We’ll see how it goes.

  1. So sorry to read this Mary. Yo had had such a great hike so recently, and your sewing was surely going great guns. Hopefully the healing will move along well, and yo will be able to do some of the things you love. Sending you hugs You have a trusty little buddy sitting there with you though. Pups are so full of love.

  2. Oh no! I’m so sorry that happened to you! So glad that your fur baby is right by your side, to console you. I’m praying for a speedy recovery from the break.

  3. Mary, I too am so sorry to hear this. I bet you could learn to drive to sewing machine to at least piece blocks.. Just stack them up and go. If you need people to cut some blocks, just let us know. Sso sorry to hear that this has happened again. I guess, as we age, there are things we couldm’t do now that we we did in our 40’s, 50′ and 60’s..

  4. I cannot edit the misspellings in my comment. Sorry. Would love to help so you can be busy. I know Keith can shop and cook but he soon be traveling again. Love that you can crochet.!

  5. So sorry to hear this. Hope you recover quickly and can get back to sewing. You had such great plans….bummer.

  6. Oh 2020 what a year you have been. I am so sorry to hear of your injury. I feel your pain. I am currently recovering from a broken arm that resulted from a fall. I ended up with a total shoulder replacement because I broke off the ball off. I am so glad that you will be able to crochet. I hope you will soon be able to sew. Make sure and get a polar care cube. It is a wonderful device that will help with the swelling. Sometimes hospitals loan them to patients after surgery. But I was able to borrow one from a friend. I would have bought one if I had not been unable to do that. It would have been worth every penny of the cost.

  7. Oh no! I am so sorry to hear this! I hope you aren’t in too much pain. Prayer for a good doctor visit tomorrow and a complete recovery.

  8. I’m so sorry. Hugs and good thoughts for quick healing. It must be so painful. Finn does look concerned. He will love the extra time close to you though.

  9. Oh, my goodness! Turns out “7” isn’t so lucky afterall, eh? It looks like you’re in good “hands”, tho, with Finn on scene. Feel better soon! {{{ HU G S }}}

  10. I do hope you have a speedy and complete recovery from this fracture. Right now, hugs are being sent your way. You will be in my heart and prayers, Mary.

  11. Ouch!! Broken bones heal, and while you are recuperating, you can enjoy knitting and planning for so many other great adventures and projects. Hope that your orthopedic doctor will have you on the mend soon. Till then, follow doctors orders.

  12. Crap, what a bummer. I’ve recently had something derail me too, but I’m back on track now. I’m thinking that with some time, you will be back at the machine peddling with your left foot. Finn sure looks concerned.

  13. There must be some lemonade and silver linings somewhere in this post….Heal quickly and hope not too much pain. Fur babies are the best.

  14. So sorry for your broken ankle. Hope you heal fast. As a retired RN my first thought was osteoporosis. It seems like more breaks than usual, even for a very active woman. Just please ask your doctor. Thinking of you. Micki

  15. What a shame about your ankle. I enjoy checking in every day to see your quilts progress and I was so inspired by one of them that I replicated the design in a quilt for my DILs nephew (gave you and your blog appropriate acknowledgement too of course). So I will miss the Quilty news. Make sure your doctor puts you on blood thinners. I broke my foot two years ago (almost went mad with the inactivity and loss of independence) and developed a deep vein thrombosis as a direct result of the moon boot and being off all weight bearing activities for weeks. Stay sane and happy!

  16. So sorry this happened to you. I know you will miss those hikes with Keith and family. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

  17. Oh, Mary, I am so sorry to hear about this. Please be well, heal quickly, and keep spirits up (I know it’s hard, but try!). They say crafting and making things with your hands heals the spirit, so keep going! I’m praying for a quick and fast recovery for you!

  18. Funny how these things happen at the worst times. I’m so sorry, Mary. What a bummer! I broke my foot a month after moving across country, & didn’t even know my neighbor’s last name to call her for help. It’s good you have handwork to do, and a cozy companion to keep you company. I hope you’re able to get that cast pdq. Thinking of you.

  19. So very, very sorry. I broke my right ankle 30+ years ago and I remember how long it took to heal (way TOO long). Wishing you a speedy recovery.

  20. Hopefully it is a nondisplaced brake and a boot will be all you need. As you know from 7yrs ago how quickly you lose muscle strength even is you are up walking with boot so be careful when you are able to take it off for short periods of time. If you have to sleep with boot put your leg in garbage bag it lets the sheets slid instead of getting caught and keeps bed from getting dirt from bottom of boot. You are in my thoughts and prayers for pain free healing.

  21. We need a oh no button! for this post! Oh no Mary, so sorry to hears this, hope you’ll be out of pain and up/around again soon. sending healing hugs!

  22. So sorry to hear this. You will have to get one of the scooters so you can get around on one floor and outside (but not the trails)!

  23. Oh my! I broke my right ankle in July. I’m almost fully recovered now. I wish you a speedy recovery!

  24. Hoping for a quick recovery. I’m helping my husband with recovery from knee replacement, and I know it isn’t easy only having one good leg to rely one. Take good care of yourself

  25. I’m so sorry!! And it would have to be your foot pedal foot. I have a Bernina and you can operate it without the foot pedal. I never use it but it would be handy in this case. Does your machine have that feature? I hope things go well with your recovery. Hopefully there will be no surgery involved.

  26. So sorry that you have broken your ankle. Perhaps when the pain settles you can sew using your left foot on the pedal. A bad sprain to my R made me try L foot. Heal fast

  27. Oh no, so sorry to hear about your ankle. I hope it’s not severe, or too painful. Mary, I learned years ago from a machine quilting class to use my knee lift with my right knee, and my foot pedal with my left foot. At the time I was using my Brother PQ1500 machine. It is the best thing I ever learned because to this day I still use my left foot on the pedal and my new Pfaff has a knee lift for my right knee. Actually it’s better than trying to make one leg and foot do two things! Of course you have lots of crafting and knitting projects to do so I know you will keep busy. Get well soon! Take a lot of vitamin D. It helps. Hugs to you, and take care.

  28. As others have said, “Bummer!” So glad you have some hand work to keep you occupied while you recover and sure hope it turns out to be a clean break that heals fast. Hugs.

  29. Oh, dear! So sorry about your ankle. I’ll be praying for healing and a speedy recovery for you. Sending lots of well wishes your way!

  30. Mary bless your heart… hope all goes well. It is amazing how fast things can happen and change our plans. Take care.

  31. Mary, I’m so sorry to hear you broke your ankle. All that hiking and biking should have made you immune to getting broken. This will definitely get in the way of your sewing activities. If you can, keep us informed of your healing progress.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  32. Oh no! Sorry to hear this, I was reading your other post and had to find out what happened. Wishing you a quick recovery ❤️

  33. So hoping that you will heal quickly ! I was sorry to hear about your injury;000
Knitting and reading may be able to keep you occupied during the healing process…
hugs and prayers for a quick recovery Julierose

  34. Oh no! So sorry to hear this! It is good that you can still knit and crochet though. I hope you have a lot of yarn stash or that Keith will go buy you some more yarn.

  35. OMGosh that’s TERRIBLE!!. One of my biggest fears is falling and breaking a bone.
    Hope the healing goes well.
    xx, Carol
