Something new

I finished both my Kindle book and my audiobook in the last day or two and started new ones. Both have kind of grabbed my attention right from the beginning.

I love reading mystery/suspense and history books. Mostly non-fiction for the history but a good historical novel is always interesting to me too … of course, first I have to weed out the “romance” ones. I don’t have any interest in them although there was a time many years ago that I read my share of romance novels.

The Kindle book I’m currently reading
The audiobook I’m currently listening to…

There’s a link on the sidebar to my GoodReads page where I keep a record of the books I’ve read but I’ll warn you my rating scale is my own … 3 stars = a good book. I don’t seem to give 5 stars but a 4 star book is one that I really enjoyed reading… and 1 or 2 stars are books that I would not recommend although everyone’s taste is different so just because I enjoyed or didn’t enjoy a book doesn’t mean you’ll have the same experience.

What’s the best book you’ve read recently?

  1. “The Daughter of Time” by Josephine Tey. I had read it several times before and still hated to put it down this time also. Excellent book that my daughter and I both have enjoyed.

  2. The Gardner Heist
    The Midnight Library
The Boys by Ron and Clint Howard
    The Red Notebook
    Half Broke Horses

I am always looking for book recommendations. I’ve already finished 32 this year. Some were not good.

  3. I’m reading Bird Brother by Rodney Stotts. Non-fiction. Subtitle: “A falconer’s journey and the healing power of wildlife”. It was an incredible journey! It’s quite an uplifting story, which I needed right now.

  4. Because of my eyesight I only listen to audio books – free & digital from my local library. I mostly listen to Detective/crime etc. I get through 3-4 books a week – more when I’ve been sewing/knitting/gardening etc. And I always need a book to get me to sleep – stops me thinking of things that keep me awake 🙂

  5. I LOVED That Summer by Jennifer Weidner👍👍. Also State of Terror by Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny. Total fiction, but very suspenseful and it actually COULD happen in the world as it is today.

I have a question for you, Mary. And anyone else can chime in, too. I use the Kindle app on my iPad, but I download tons of free books every day. It takes FOREVER to get all those books onto the app. I can’t actually READ a book until all the downloading is completed. It may take 15-20 minutes for that to happen. Have been thinking of getting a dedicated Kindle to read books from Amazon. Which model do you have? I just want something to use for reading. I also borrow e-books from my library, but that’s a totally different app, and that just takes seconds to use and then read something.

    • I would buy a Kindle for reading. iPads run out of memory and that is probably why it is so slow. A Kindle will hold a lot of books. I have almost 1,000 on my Kindle and no problem downloading new ones. And the battery lasts much longer than an iPad. I have a Kindle Voyage that I love but they no longer make them. If I were to buy a new one I would buy the Kindle Paperwhite from Amazon. My husband uses a Kindle Paperwhite and really likes it.

      • Janice,
Thanks for your suggestion about a Kindle Paperwhite. I will definitely check into it.

My iPad has well over 2,000 books in my Kindle app, and I have only used about 30% or so of the memory on it. The Kindle app is the only thing I have problems with. iI also use Apple Books many times, and things download and can be opened immediately. But I usually download only one book at a time to Books. I get multiple e-mails every day concerning free or reduced priced Amazon books. Some days I may snag 10+ free books. I “purchase” them, and they go to the app immediately. But I have to actually OPEN the Kindle app before they download. The problem arises when I don’t open the app for a week or more because I’m reading in another app. Then I open the Kindle app and there are 30+ books that need to be downloaded. And THAT is when things get bogged down. It may take as long as 30 minutes (or more) to get everything actually loaded to the iPad. This is my second iPad. I keep thinking it’s “new.” It’s an iPad Pro, but I think it’s now 5 years old. Had the same issue with my original iPad, which was an iPad 2, maybe? I LOVE my technology, but some days it makes me CRAZY!!

        And now back to quilting!!

    • I have a Kindle Paperwhite and love it. The font size is adjustable. If you’re using the Kindle app, you’ll be much better served by buying a Kindle and using it for all your reading. I only buy real books if there are pictures, because the Kindle doesn’t allow you to enlarge pictures, and the picture quality isn’t great. So, for a book with maps or a biography or autobiography, Kindles aren’t great.

  6. I love three authors: Harlan Coban, Lee Child and James Lee Burke. The books are hard and gritty sometimes. And I love them. How is Keith doing?

    • Right with you on Harlan Coban👍👍. I haven’t read the other 2 authors yet. Will check them out.

  7. The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel. I recommend listening to the audio book as the reader conveys the emotions of the story well. Based on true story events.

  8. Three I’ve recently read that I really enjoyed were:

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
The Last Grand Duchess by Bryn Turnbull
Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

I also am always looking for book ideas and love when you post what you are reading!

  9. Love to read, too, Mary. The best book I’ve read so far this year is Great Circle, by Maggie Shipstead. I like mysteries, too, as well a historical fiction. I enjoyed the mystery, The Matchmaker: A Spy in Berlin, by Paul Vidich, this year, too. Fun to see what everyone is reading!
