More bears

I may be a little obsessed with bears. It started as a mild interest a while back as a way to use some leftover Minkee fabric from my quilt backs and I looked at a pattern or two … but my sewing is mostly limited to quilts and lots of the ideas/patterns looked too complicated.

Then a few weeks ago I saw a Facebook post by Evelyn Bowen showing a group of doll quilts with stuffed animals ready to donate. This is her photo.

So I got a little more active looking for bear patterns and as you saw, when Mo was here, she insisted we try to make a bear … or two.

The Facebook post also shared that Dollar Tree sells dolls and stuffed animals in bulk for $1.50 which seems kind of unbelievable but I decided to take a look and give it a try – I ordered 24 bears (which were actually $1.25 each) knowing that the quality might be completely unacceptable. They arrived today and I was pleasantly surprised. These will work great for donating to kids in need with the doll quilts I make.

I will also continue to play around with making some of my own and found another simple, free memory bear pattern today at this link.

And no, I’m not slowing down on the quilting front … just adding another obsession to go with the quilting, crochet, and knitting!!

  1. What a great idea! I think fire departments, EMTs, and police officers would welcome those to give to children dealing with a traumatic situation.

  2. I think this is awesome! I’m actually finishing the binding today on a doll quilt and also plan to add a stuffed animal or doll to each to donate. You’ve inspired the idea.

  3. These are so cute and I’ve never thought of donating doll quilts with stuffed animals before.

  4. Oh my goodness, Mary. How darn cute are those little bundles of stuffed animals?! Sigh. I do not need to add another project to my lengthy list of to-be-made sooner than later. But how could these NOT go on that list?! Seriously. What a great idea. I have a little one about Mo’s age . . . she would be over the moon with one of those cute bears for only $1.25 with its own mini-quilt. I’d better stop typing and get to work! Happy Friday to you. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
