Quilted

I donated a stack of quilts today – 11 of them – and it felt good to move them along and on their way to those in need. I also loaded and quilted the Autumn Bricks top. Pantograph is Blowing Leaves.

I’m going to be saving up some bindings on these next few quilts to stitch down in August. I will be having surgery on the 6th of August – a bilateral mastectomy for breast cancer … yep, in the middle of all the other stuff I’ve got going on, I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer. Luckily it’s been caught early and I’m hoping there won’t be too much treatment required beyond surgery although I’m pretty sure they’ll be doing hormonal therapy. I’ll be referred to the oncologist after surgery so we’ll see what else will be required.

In the meantime, I’ve got another week here at home before we head back to Virginia. We’ll be there for 3 weeks and I’m looking forward to spending more time with Mom.

  2. It’s another beautiful quilt. You are an inspiration to me and I guess it time I loaded my quilts up too and got them in the mail. Your news is very sad to me and of course all of us will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. You are brave Mary.

  3. You have joined the ranks of a cancer warrior. Make sure the implants go in front of the muscle. I am about to have that correction made. I hope your follow up treatment is minimal and you are followed closely. Prayers for a great medical team and support system. I am sorry you have to go through this. Hang in there.

  4. Love your blog, admire all you do. All the very best for the operation, we have a saying here in New Zealand – Kia Kaha, which means stay strong.

  5. I went through breast cancer surgery, one side, 10 yrs ago. A bit scary. But, so far all is well. I will be thinking positive thoughts all the way through your treatment. I know you’ll keep us informed. This is just another stage in your life. BTW, I like the colors in this latest quilt. Keep up the good works.

  6. Oh, Mary. When it rains it pours, huh? Getting handwork ready for your recovery is so smart, as is your positive outlook. I’ll be thinking of you and sending good vibes.

  7. Oh, no, Mary! How awful! Unbelievable. That is a drastic surgical plan for something that was “caught early”. God keep you safe.

  8. Prayers continue and I know you will have the best treatment and the added bonus of lots of love from family ,friends and blog supporters. Time to know who you are and seek support and love from those willing to share with you. Don’t get overwhelmed and please allow your wisdom and knowledge to guide you.

  11. Oh Mary, I am so sorry to hear of this. Someone above said when it rains it pours, and it seems as if you have been standing in the rain for quite a while now. Prayers for successful surgery and a swift recovery.

  12. I am writing as a fellow breast cancer survivor, so I hope you have a successful surgery and my thoughts and prayers are with you. It is not a pleasant diagnoses to hear and I hope you are okay with it. You will make it through and hormone therapy is not that bad from my experience so far. Good luck.

  13. So sorry, been on hormone therapy for 5+ years and it’s very manageable. Sending you prayers and happy thoughts.

  14. I’m sorry to read the news of your diagnosis of breast cancer. I’m sure you are feeling so overwhelmed right now with all the other concerns you at this time in your life, but you will get through this one day at a time. It is good that the doctors have found this early. Thanks for sharing with us so we can help support you and encourage you to be brave. I will include you in my prayers as well.

  15. Dear Mary,
I’m so sorry to hear this news. I pray for a successful surgery and complete healing for you.
    Sending hugs and love,
    Susan

  16. The news of the quilts was wonderful, but the news of breast cancer is not—I will be thinking of you, and hoping this is just a speed bump. I am sorry cancer found you–speedy recovery, and not much after care is what I hope.

  17. Sorry that you are going through yet another difficult time, but glad it was caught early. Prayers for grace and strength to meet each day… one at time.

  18. Oh Mary, I’m sorry you have to deal with this. We all have our burdens to bear, and cancer never happens at a good time, but thankfully yours was caught early. This must be such a worry for your mom at a time she is fragile herself. I will put both of you in the forefront of my prayer list.

After a year of treatments for malignant melanoma I found out in May I am cancer free and treatments are complete. Let’s celebrate together when you are found to be cancer free!

  19. I will keep you in my prayers Mary. My mom was a breast cancer survivor and lived to be 92 1/2. It was scary for her, I was 4 and my brother was 1. It was 1963 when there were not many options for her except cobalt treatments. She made it thought and Thank Goodness, I got to keep my beloved Mom for my whole life. I will keep you in my thoughts. Patti

  20. What a shocker to read your news this morning, Mary. I will be holding every good thought for your speedy recovery. Just unbelievable that this upset has been added to your life at this juncture…as if you didn’t have enough on your plate. I know your resilience and positive attitude will carry you through. I’ll be thinking of you, my friend, and sending every positive vibe I can. Very best wishes, and virtual hugs, from California.

  21. I’m so sorry to hear that you have one more health issue to deal with. Cancer terrifies me! So much of it in my family. I’m glad it was caught early and that you have such a positive attitude. I’ll be sending positive thoughts your way too!

  22. You and your family are in my prayers. Perhaps all those quilts that you’ve run through the long arm will provide miles and miles of hand stitching binding to keep you occupied during the recovery period.

  23. Sending prayers for strength and courage and healing! 🙏💐
It’s 14 years since my skirmish with the same diagnosis…..🙌
It’s 3 years since my daughter (she’s adopted) went the same path…!
    We’re both doing fine.
So very much harder to endure the “c” word in a loved one than myself.

  24. Gosh, Mary, I’m so sorry to hear your news. Every woman lives with this fear. You are such a strong woman and such a role model for us all. You will come through this and keep on going. You have such a strong support system, and then you have all of us! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  25. I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2008. Best wishes…it’s a lot about attitude..SMILE and LAUGH. It gets you through it all ❤️

  26. I will be thinking of you and sending positive thoughts out into the universe for your healing.

  27. Oh Mary, I’m reminded of Gilda Radner’s book, ‘It’s Always Something’. She often heard her father use the term when she was growing up and she adopted it for her stints on Saturday Night Live. She used the term as the title of her autobiography after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. And, honestly, isn’t it the truth!

I’m glad your cancer was caught early and look forward to and pray for a good outcome for you and your family.

  28. Fabulous to unload all those quilts. So glad you get to spend time before your surgery with your, Mom, I know that is really important to you. Prayers for you and yours – sorry you need to travel this road but a different path than the last one. I know you will do well – so much love surrounds you. Thinking of you.

  32. I am sorry to read your news about breast cancer. I know you have a positive outlook and thankful that cancer “caught early.” I will pray for your upcoming surgery, good medical treatment and full recovery.

  33. Dear Mary, Horrible diagnosis. My 2 daughters inherited the BRCA 2 Gene through their father and of course got the bloody disease. Both had double mastectomies and reconstructions and 17 years post they are doing well. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Trust your oncologist.

  34. So sorry to hear this Mary. I will be praying for you. I am having a lumpectomy this Thursday so I can only imagine how you are feeling. Stay strong and take care of yourself

  35. Mary I’m so sorry to read of your cancer diagnosis, please know that I will be thinking of you and I’m praying you have a complete and speedy recovery.
I would also like to extend my thoughts and prayers to all those who have gone through a cancer diagnosis, I had a sister who had pancreatic cancer, and I know how hard it is on all the family.

  36. Sending you lots of good wishes (from Australia) in the preparation for your surgery. I love your quilts, and thank you for sharing information and pics of them.
