Scrappy AND Wonky

Two of my favorite things in quilts! You know that along with my HeartStrings group that I make a lot of quilts with leftover strips and strings so when I was offered the opportunity to review the book Scrappy Wonky Quilt Block Extravaganza published by C&T Publishing I was eager to participate.

The book is very through, not only does it review basics about quilting in general, it takes you through the process of creating a number of different wonky blocks, AND has patterns for projects ranging from coasters, to pillows, to quilts, and more!

Some of those pieces are a bit on the small size for me but who doesn’t love a wonky log cabin block?? Or how about a wonky 9 patch?

Years ago, I had a template for a simple windmill block that got lost in one of my moves … how simple would it be to just make wonky version without a template – pretty easy!

I can see myself trying out the wonky half log cabin and courthouse step blocks too. You can’t have too many wonky and scrappy blocks in your repertoire!

Want to see what the authors Shannon and Jason are up to? Check out them out on Instagram at this link.

If you’d like to try some of these blocks/projects yourself, leave a comment on this post to be entered into a drawing for a digital copy of the book – I’ll randomly draw a winner on Monday afternoon.

  1. Good morning, Mary. I get so many ideas for charity quilts from your blog. That wonky blocks book would be great fun.

  2. Just caught up on reading your posts and saw the one about your upcoming surgery. I am going thru treatments right now for lung cancer. It’s not much fun ( radiation especially) but God is in control and we both will get thru this! Hope all goes well for you. I will keep you in my prayers.
I love the quilts in the book you showed!

  3. I’d love to learn these techniques to help me make a dent in my massive fabric stash in a productive and efficient/easy way! Would also be super helpful for our quilting ministry to use up lots of donated fabric

  4. Looks like a fun book! The wonky flower in the book has caught my eye especially. I do love scrappy, and when it can be done without precise piecing it’s even better. I do those windmill blocks a lot, but just use 5″ squares stacked all face up. And just cut on a diagonal. Once each quadrant is sewn I do square them all up.

  5. I love scrappy blocks and work with scraps all the time but usually just the same pattern. Friends often hand over their scraps as they do not want to deal with them. This post has given me some new ideas. When I saw your twirly block, I remembered that I made blocks just like pictured and they are still in a baggie waiting to be assembled! I would love this book. Thank you for sharing.

  6. That sounds like a wonderful book to have for inspiration. Thanks for your diligent blogging. I always look forward to your news and will be wishing you the best on your health journey.

  7. All the projects look wonderful. I think I’d like to make the wonky log cabin first. I have LOTS of scraps!

  8. I was sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis. I am a year and a half survivor of my second bout with breast cancer. Prayers are with you. The recovery from a mastectomy wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I would love a copy of the wonky blocks book.

  9. So sorry to hear of your cancer diagnosis. Have you considered a second opinion at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston? I’m praying for you.

  10. Thanks for reviewing the book. The projects look wonderful. Hoping your love for color helps you over the next period of time.

  11. Mary, I love all your posts and follow you long time. The bear picture is still in my mind. So, I am not native englisch but from all this comments I see that I understand correct. I am very sorry for you! You are in my prayers, know from my hubby… cancer… so, big big hug! Guess your family will do everything for you to support.
