Our HeartStrings challenge last month was Charm Squares but I was focusing on quilting and binding while I was home so I’m playing catch up.
The Disappearing 9 Patch quilts have been around for a while but I’ve never really been tempted to make one before now. Some I liked, some I didn’t and I hadn’t really taken the time to figure why.
I saw this free pattern and the lightbulb came on … using consistent neutral and center fabrics calmed things down a bit and the results were more appealing to me. My Charm Squares are being used for the 4 corners.

I’m using the layout for the block but not the actual instructions from the link above because I’m using 2 charm packs for my quilt.

And I’m liking how it’s coming along … I like the process and can see myself making another couple versions …. one using scraps in place of the Charm Squares … and one using yardage like the linked pattern.

Cute pattern! Glad the charm squares are working.
I’ve never made one either but a fellow quilter told me once you make one, you won’t stop. I’ll see how yours turn out first.
Lovely work. I have done this quilt in red, grey and black .
Absolutly lovely… yes, hence stared you cant stop. And using cutted fabric… happy sewing. Bit think about taking a brake in your situation! ♥️
Using a consistent center color is the key to a Disappearing Nine Patch. I often make them with black with white print corners, white with black print sides and a red center. The teens really like these. They are bound in red.
Hi Mary, here I am in Melbourne, Australia and wanted to tell you that on Tuesday my quilting group had a workshop on Tuesday of this very pattern, “disappearing nine patch” I went along and used some charm squares that had been lingering for a long time. Very happy I’ll be making another. 😃
Nice colourful selection of fabrics – this will cheer somebody up, wrapped in love 🙂
Looking good, Mary!!
The pack’s colorway plays so nicely together with that neutral!
I cut a Christmas layer cake into 5 inch squares and used them in the corners with white snow flakes and a red center. It made 2 large throws. It was well received.
Good fabric choices and placement.
The fabrics you chose help illustrate how the disappearing nine patch works. Thank you! I read the directions but didn’t quite understand but maybe because the fabrics they used in the illustration were hard to follow. Hmm. I may have to try this!
I really like this one Mary. Years ago, I made this pattern using royal blue butterfly yardage in place of the charm packs, a black centre and a blue solid for the other background. The shape of the finished block seemed to replicate the butterfly print. My friend really loved it.
