I was discharged from the hospital yesterday and got home around 5pm. There are some concerns that need further testing and investigation and the need for surgery has not been completely ruled out yet but I’m cautiously optimistic that I’m on the path to returning to normal.

Much to Finn’s dismay I’m setting myself up in the arm chair rather than reclining love seat. I’m short and my feet don’t reach the floor in any of our chairs so the little stool helps me keep the proper body alignment.

Finn is not thrilled about not being able to sit with me but he can sit on his quilt and keep his eye on me and can come over for a cuddle in my lap now and then.

As much as I want to run right down and sew today I’m not going to. I didn’t really get any clear guidance about going back to “work” but my body is telling me I need to take it slow. We’ll see how I feel in a couple days.

I did an easy walk on the treadmill this morning and am so thankful we got it at the beginning of this year. It’s been a blessing since this episode started the beginning of July – walking is still one of the best things I can do to be active and the pain is less when I’m walking.

I’ve also got a referral to PT in progress. I’ve been doing a lot of Yoga stretches the last couple months trying to resolve my sciatica but after talking to the Physical Therapist in the hospital, I shouldn’t have been doing poses that twisted me based on the back issues causing my sciatic pain. I had already been doing some of the ones in this slide show (scroll down) and I’m being really careful about what I’m doing until I get started with PT but I did do an easy session this afternoon.

I have not been up to responding to each message but wanted to thank you all for your support and encouragement.

  2. I don’t need a personal reply but please post a few lines when you feel up to it. I bet there are lots of us that would be thrilled to know how you are without making your life more difficult. And if that is not good for you I for one will wait until you are feeling better.

  4. I am glad you are home and hope you find the physical therapy helps. I know you miss the quilting with it such a large part of your life. I am sure you will be back to it soon. You are challenging me and my back to return to the treadmill — THANKS!

  5. I’m glad you are better and at home now. Hopefully you won’t need surgery. Take care of yourself and tell Finn everything is OK now.

  6. Mary, The link you provided to the Sciatica exercises included almost ALL of the exercises my PT recommended I do when my own Sciatica was flaring up. Hope the PT provides even more relief for you. Thoughts, prayers, and gentle cyber hugs heading your way from Nebraska. Don’t worry about your blog, we will all be here when you are ready to return to it. You just need to take care of YOU right now.

  7. I am glad you are doing a little better. Don’t worry about us, just focus on getting better. Think about listening to some audible books to help keep you entertained. You are still in my prayers.

  8. I have similar exercises that my PT gave me to do for my back. They really help as long as I remember to do them. In my mind I’m still 40 and have to remind myself that I cannot do all the things I used to do. Hoping that with rest and PT you will have a quick recovery.

  9. Glad you are home and hope you continue to feel better. I have had disc/sciatica problems and I thought it compared to giving birth!! I had forgotten but I made an entire lap quilt while standing. My sewing machine was on the washer and I cut out fabric on kitchen counter. Standing and walking gave me the most relief!

  10. My DH has suffered with spinal issues, including sciatica for years trying many remedies offered him, including surgery. He got the quickest relief with acupuncture and continues monthly to maintain some comfort. Many insurances do not cover it, but it has been well worth the expense for him.

  12. I’m so thankful you are home again and taking it easy. Hopefully you’ll have a PT appointment soon and can learn the proper exercises to do for your body. Finn looks so handsome, that’s great he is allowed to have a cuddle with you every now and then. Take care and take it easy!

  13. I’m so glad you are home, and hope you continue to mend. Finn looks pretty concerned white he keeps an eye on you. Isn’t it interesting how they seem to know when we aren’t feel well.
