Fat Quarters

Stephanie has pulled Fat Quarters out of the hat for our June precut challenge … I guess that means the strings are going to get put away but before I start anything else, I’ll get the Strips and Strings Log Cabin top assembled.

I’ve been looking through my inspiration folders and my website and thinking about what I’m going to make but I think I need to choose my fat quarters first …. Or at least choose a few options and then go back and look at possible patterns.

I was looking at Sara’s blog today and saw a great scrappy Broken Dish Star block and had to quickly draft a quilt using the block to save the idea for a future quilt … I’d love it in scrappy fall colors but who knows, I might even have a set of fat quarters that would work. We’ll see.

As usual I’ve drafted it in a limited color scheme for quickness but my version will be scrappier … maybe 2 fabrics per block (plus the background) … maybe 4 like Sara’s. I’ll also use 4 inch finished HSTs for a 16 inch finished block and my quilt will take just 12 blocks.

Thanks for the inspiration Sara!

  1. That scrappy block really is cool. I’d like to make mine big (20″), maybe use 4 & make a 30s baby quilt with it! Good luck with your FQs!

  2. I really like the idea of making the block larger, and it’s an easy one to adapt to any size. Great idea for someday down the road.
