My appointment this afternoon was canceled so I had time to come downstairs … before playing… I got a binding made and sewn on and I’ll hand stitch that down tonight.
Then I thought let’s make a quick little doll/bear quilt. I had a baggie with leftover pieces of fat quarters from this quilt.
In my HeartStrings group, Ann had been talking about working on rectangle quilts … and a while back Bev had talked about Potato Chip blocks. So without thinking, I pulled out a GO die and started cutting rectangles.

I was thinking I’d make a big 24 inch block from rectangles. And then I realized I probably didn’t have enough variety in my fabrics and would be repeating them too much. So I went to my book shelf …

And pulled out one of my books.

After looking through the book, I changed my plan (see the cover quilt?!?) and when I started sewing my rectangles together thought … basically you’re just making a Happy Block … and it would have been easier to cut those side pieces the length of the block instead of sewing two rectangles of the same fabric together! I did at least think to cut a 4.5 inch center for the blocks instead of using two rectangles!
At any rate … it’s a cute little quilt top.

I still want to make a scrappy rectangle little quilt but next time I’ll plan better before I start cutting!
That turned out really pretty, Mary! Sorry about your canceled appointment, but you made good use of the extra time.
I love this block, and you can do fuzzy cutting for the center ! The cutting can be also simplify by cutting 4 equal 6.5 inches rectangles to wrap around the center square with one partial seam. This method avoid a lot of seams to bother to match.
Poor planning or serendipity. I like the quilt as sewn so… I hate canceled appointments. Hope they fit you in quickly. I called a doctor today with whom I had been getting appointments in a week and the next available is 7 weeks from now. Ugh. Time to switch to planning on seeing your mom. Good thoughts and big smiles.
I think it was just a “creative opportunity”! Your quilt top looks great! It’s always so nice to use what is on hand and create something fun.
I love the colors in this little quilt. Have a safe trip and enjoy your time with mom.
I love love this little quilt. I’m glad you cut the strips differently because you sure got a cute quilt.
That’s a cute little quilt and that book is one of my favorites! I think I’ve made about half the quilts in it.
Judy Turner and Margaret were some of the foundation members of our Guild in 1976. We are celebrating our 50th anniversary next year – the oldest guild in Australia. Judy taught me to patchwork in about 1983 I think.
