The local quilt guild is having their show this weekend. Last night we went to the opening and Keith got to hear a little about how my efforts were appreciated and how MANY quilts I’ve given them for donation.
They had a Quilts of Valor presentation and it was the first that I had been present at. I’ve made and donated many quilts for Veterans over the years but through other HeartStrings members not the official organization.
I had found out at the September meeting they were asking members to make Quilts of Valor and were collecting them in November. I had just finished 3 veteran quilts I was taking to Maine for donation so I couldn’t help out but I told the organizer that maybe next year I could. I do like to donate local too.
My father-in-law Bruce Johnson served in the army. He retired as a Lt Colonel and his ashes are interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
I made my first quilt for a Veteran for him before Quilts of Valor was formed.
This was just a year or so after I’d started quilting and my sister Debbie helped out by appliquéing the eagle in the center. I made the rest of the quilt and the names of each of his family members are quilted in the stars.
This was my own design and I thought I did a nice job!
I love the custom design quilt. What a great honor to include the service and family members. That is certainly an heirloom for generations to come. Thank you so much for sharing.

I think your Go Army quilt is terrific! I belong to a local Quilts of Valor chapter here in Florida, and have made many red, white, and blue quilts, too.

Your quilt is beautiful Mary. I made a quilt of valor for my husband as he served in Vietnam. I have given boxes of fabrics for guild members to use in making these quilts.

Your custom quilt is great! I like the letter style you used. Letters are often the most difficult to get right.
